nshrine closing

It’s been a pleasure operating nshrine.com.  For over eight years, we’ve provided a free space for people to set up memorials, places of support, places of worship and places for friends.

Earlier this year, a community came into nshrine, bringing with them unresolved conflicts, quickly turning nshrine into a place of battle, including expanding their battle into shrines not involved with their squabbles.  Our resources were already stretched working a new edition with many new features.  The task of babysitting this group began absorbing all those resources. At that point nshrine became unsustainable.

If you have paid for a current premium service for your shrine, please email artwells@nshrine.com for a refund.

We may be bringing nshrine.com back online some day. It just won’t be very soon.

(Almost) Limitless Shrines

Filed under: Uncategorized — artwells @ 8:12 pm

I’ve increased the limit of shrines a member could have from 5 to 500.  I wanted to remove the limit altogether and will at some point, but this was the quickest way to respond to a suggestion.  If you’d like to have more than 500 shrines for some reason, we’d love to hear it.  (Seriously, it would be great to know why.)

This improvement was done in response to an nshrine user’s suggestion from nshrine’s new “feedback” application, provided by getsatisfaction.com.  Go now to nshrine and click on the feedback tab to provide your own suggestion.

New Ways To Light A Candle Through Twitter

Filed under: Uncategorized — artwells @ 9:55 pm

We have new ways of lighting candles on nshrine through twitter.

You can still light a candle in the twitter shrine just by sending a twitter to the nshrine account. Try sending “@nshrine happy day!” in twitter now to see it work. That all you need to do. You’ll get a link back to the candle you’ve lit.

New/changed options:

  • To pick a color other than yellow, add a ‘#’ followed by the mood or, now, color name. See http://nshrine.com/help/twittercandles.htmlfor list.
  • To pick a shrine other than the twitter shrine, add a ‘:’ followed by the shrine name. (Note: this used to be ‘@’. This will no longer work.)
  • To light a candle for another twitter user, add a ‘@’ some place after the ‘@nshrine’ at the beginning. This will link to the user AND send them a tweet about the candle.

See http://nshrine.com/help/twittercandles.html for more information and examples.

This was a featured inspired by an nshrine user’s request. Others are on the way. If you have something you’d like added to nshrine, let me know.

Twitter Candles

Filed under: Uncategorized — artwells @ 12:25 pm

You may now add candles using twitter. If you have an account and would like to add a candle at nshrine just send a message beginning with “@nshrine”. You’ll receive a reply with a link to the candle in the
twitter shrine.

You can also add candles to other shrines and use any of the available candle colors. See the Help page for more options.

This was a featured inspired by an nshrine user’s request. If you have something you’d like added to nshrine, let me know.

Paypal has been added to join Google Checkout as a way to pay for ad-free and/or privacy for your shrine.  It is also accepted for payment for gift candles.

As with Google Checkout, you can use major credit cards to pay for payment, as well as existing credits and accounts.

To celebrate this added feature, 12 months of ad-free time is the same price as 6 months.  This offer will remain valid until the 13th of December 2008, so hurry on over and help out your favorite shrine.

This feature was added by request of an nshrine user. If you would like to see a new feature, let me know.

Silent Candles No Longer Mailed, Hotmail and MSN Woes

Filed under: Uncategorized — artwells @ 8:34 pm

Nshrine.com will no longer send out “silent” candle notifications for your shrine Candles with a thought or message attached will still be mailed as always, but those placed with no words will no longer be sent via email. Shrines not set to send email notifications will not send email, as always.

“Silent” candles will still appear in the shrine, and in the shrine’s RSS feed, but the email will no longer be sent. This was inspired by shrine maintainer suggestion, as well as recent delivery problems with some email service providers.

Probably related to this, Hotmail and MSN email addresses are currently not receiving email from nshrine.com. I am currently corresponding with their administrators to get this straightened out.

To learn more about gift candles, go to http://nshrine.com/help/giftcandles.html

To purchase gift candles, check the “Gift Candle” tab on your profile page.

Bugfix release

Filed under: Uncategorized — artwells @ 8:57 am

Internet Explorer 7 users should now have full access to color changing tools on their shrines.  A conflict between the color wheel, the excellent farbtastic, and the odd manner in which Internet Explorer 7 uses jquery‘s offsetParent, made the color wheel act poorly at best. It should now be fine.

Also new is the ability to change your email address through the “Settings” tab of you profile change.

Gift Candles

Filed under: Uncategorized — artwells @ 10:12 am

Now you can add special “gift candles” to your favorite shrines.   Each candle removes advertising from the shrines for one week (or adds a week to the ad-free time if any).

Simply login in to your account and look for the ‘Make This A Gift Candle’ checkbox when you place a candle in your favorite shrine.  When you check that box, you’ll see a special gold base on your candle and all ads will be removed.
To see one, see the candle placed by artwells in the hope shrine.
(This is also a good opportunity to see what an ad-free shrine looks like, if you haven’t seen one lately.)

More gift candles can be purchased for your account by visiting your profile page and clicking on the ‘Gift Candles’ tab.  Here you will also see how many gift candles you have left.  Gift candles can be purchased for other accounts by visiting that account’s ‘Gift Candle’ tab.

Enjoy. As always, do let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.
